How to use this tool

Put your data in a table with the names in the first row and the dates in the first column, one column per bar. One row per bar with the dates across the top works too.
Paste the table into the data box or upload a CSV file. A copy from Excel or Google Sheets pastes as it is.
Check the preview, then set the title, the number format, how many bars show and where the axis starts.
Add captions for the dates that matter, and change the color of any bar or give it an emoji, such as a flag.
Record a widescreen video for YouTube or a vertical one for Shorts, TikTok and Reels, or copy the embed code for your website.

Frequently asked questions

What is a bar chart race?

A bar chart race is an animated bar chart where the bars grow, shrink and swap places over time, one frame per period, so you can watch a ranking change. People also call it a racing bar chart.

What data format does a bar chart race need?

One number per name per period. The maker detects three layouts: dates down the first column, dates across the first row, or three columns of date, name and value. Commas, currency signs and percent signs in numbers are fine. An empty cell between two numbers is filled in a straight line, and a 0 hides the bar for that period.

Can I download the bar chart race as an MP4?

Yes, where the browser can record MP4, which Safari and recent Chrome and Edge do. Firefox records WebM, and YouTube accepts both. The video is 1920 by 1080 or 1080 by 1920 at 30 frames a second, with no sound and mindber.com/bar-chart-race in the top corner.

Is my data uploaded to Mindber?

No. Reading the table, drawing the chart and recording the video all happen in your browser. A share or embed link carries the chart itself after the # sign, and browsers don't send that part of an address to a server, so we never receive a copy.

How big can the table be?

Up to 400 names, 2,000 periods and 200,000 numbers, with 5 to 15 bars on screen. A big table makes a long share link, so drop names that never reach the top before you share it.
