Claude Pro vs ChatGPT Plus (2026): Same $20, Different Strengths
comparisonUpdated 12 min read
Claude Pro vs ChatGPT Plus in October 2026: what each $20 plan includes, which models you get, usage limits, privacy and when to upgrade or stay free.

Last verified: 2026-10-20. Both companies changed their plans in the past six weeks, so check the linked pages before you pay.
By Frankie C. · Senior Market Researcher, Mindber. Tracks 500+ AI/SaaS tools across SEA markets via the Mindber Innovation Index methodology.
How we assessed this: We read Anthropic's and OpenAI's plan pages, help articles and model announcements on 20 October 2026, along with Arena's public leaderboards. Mindber did not test either plan hands-on, and vendor benchmark results are labeled as vendor claims. Neither plan gets a Mindber Innovation Index score here. The index rates products, and both products swapped their main models in the last month.
Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus cost the same $20 a month in the US, and they buy different things. If you write, work through long documents or code in a terminal, Claude Pro gets more out of the money. ChatGPT Plus is the one for images, and for the widest set of built-in tools in an app OpenAI says more than 1.2 billion people use every week.
Asked to pick one plan for a reader we know nothing about, we'd pick Claude Pro. Its top model leads Arena's creative-writing and WebDev boards, and Pro is the cheapest way to get it. Anyone who makes images every week should ignore that advice and buy Plus.
This post sticks to the two paid plans. The free and team plans, and a model-by-model chart of price and speed, are in our Claude vs ChatGPT guide.
What each $20 plan includes
Both plans are personal subscriptions that add usage, better models and extra tools on top of a free plan. The rows below come from Anthropic's plan page and OpenAI's plan cards and Plus help article.
Read on 2026-10-20 from claude.com/pricing, chatgpt.com/pricing and the OpenAI Help Center. Features roll out over weeks, so some may not show in every account yet.
| Dimension | Claude Pro | ChatGPT Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Price (US) | $20 a month, or $200 a year | $20 a month, billed monthly |
| Top models | Opus 5.5, Sonnet 5.5, Haiku 5.5. Fable through usage credits | GPT-6 Sol in Chat. GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol in Work and Codex |
| Coding agent | Claude Code | Codex |
| Research | Research mode | Expanded deep research |
| Image creation | No photos or illustrations. Charts and diagrams in beta | Yes, higher quality than Free |
| Agents and tasks | Hand off and schedule tasks | Work agent across apps and files, scheduled tasks |
| App connections | Connectors, Claude in Chrome, Microsoft 365 and Outlook | Email and calendar connections |
| Projects and storage | Projects (Free allows up to 5) | Larger projects, 20 GB of storage |
| Context window | Up to 1M tokens, varies by model | Not stated in tokens |
| Ads | None listed | No ads |
| Training on your chats | Allowed unless you opt out | Allowed unless you opt out |
Most rows match more closely than the marketing suggests. Both plans include a coding agent, a research mode, projects, memory, voice and app connections. The real gaps are billing and images, plus how openly each vendor states its limits.
Which models you get on each plan
Claude Pro gives you Anthropic's current lineup and lets you pick the model. Anthropic released Claude Opus 5.5 on 22 September 2026, Sonnet 5.5 on 28 September and Haiku 5.5 on 7 October. Anthropic says Opus 5.5 performs at the level of Fable 5.1 on most work and costs 40% less to run than Opus 5.
Fable 5.1 is Anthropic's top model for general use. The monthly fee doesn't cover it: on Pro it runs only on paid usage credits. Free users already get Sonnet and Haiku, so Opus is the main model upgrade that Pro buys.
On ChatGPT Plus you pick a thinking level, not a model. On 7 October 2026 OpenAI moved the Chat tab to GPT-6, and Plus users get GPT-6 Sol there at the Instant, Medium and High levels. Extra High and the GPT-6 Pro model aren't part of Plus.
The detail that surprised us most sits one level down. Plus does reach OpenAI's flagship, GPT-6 Astra, but only inside ChatGPT Work and Codex. GPT-6.1 Sol, released on 29 September, lives in the same two places and is not yet in Chat. A Plus subscriber meets OpenAI's strongest models when handing over a task, not in the chat window most people open.
What independent rankings say about those models
On Arena, where people vote blind between two anonymous answers, the models in each plan placed like this on the day we checked:
- Text, all categories: Claude Opus 5.5 ranked 3rd. The best OpenAI entry, GPT-5.6 Sol, ranked 21st, with GPT-6.1 Sol 22nd.
- Creative writing: Claude Opus 5.5 ranked 1st. The best OpenAI entry ranked 20th.
- WebDev: Claude Opus 5.5 ranked 1st, GPT-6 Astra 2nd, Claude Sonnet 5.5 3rd and GPT-6.1 Sol 4th.
Arena tests models through their APIs at set effort levels, not through the Claude and ChatGPT apps. GPT-6 Sol, the model in ChatGPT's Chat tab, wasn't near the top of the writing category when we checked. So the rankings describe the models, and the plan around each model is a separate question.
Artificial Analysis runs its own test battery and points the same way on raw score. Below is each model's best result on its Intelligence Index, read the same day. Our Model Arena tracks the same models by capability and price.

API users should weigh cost too. GPT-6.1 Sol reaches 52 for 72 cents per test task. Sonnet 5.5 spends $5.46 to get to 56.
Writing, docs and slides
This autumn Anthropic folded its Cowork workspace into the main Claude app, and Claude Docs and Claude Slides came with it, both in beta. You ask for a report or a deck, edit it with Claude, then download it as PowerPoint or PDF. Pro and Max get the merge first.
ChatGPT Plus handles writing well too. Its GPT-6 update added Intelligent UI, which lets an answer include charts, forms and buttons. That helps with explanations and quick tools more than with long drafts.
Whichever plan you pay for, your instructions shape a draft more than the model does. Name the reader and paste a sample of your style, as our prompt engineering guide shows step by step. If you need templates or brand voice controls, dedicated AI writing tools do that job better than either chat plan.
Coding: Claude Code vs Codex
Both plans now come with a coding agent. Claude Code runs in your terminal and code editor. Codex comes with Plus, with more usage than the free plan allows.
On Arena's WebDev leaderboard, voters compare web apps built from the same prompt. Places two to four sat inside Arena's own margin of error. Below first place, call it a tie.
We found no independent check of either vendor's coding claims. OpenAI says GPT-6.1 Sol matches GPT-6 Astra on its DeepSWE coding test at about one-fifth of the cost. Anthropic reports gains for Opus 5.5 over Opus 5 on coding and agent tasks.
For heavy coders, limits matter more than quality. Coding agents read many files and run long sessions, and both vendors meter that work, so a few hours of coding a day can outgrow either plan. Agent loops that test and fix their own code, the setup our loop engineering post walks through, run longer sessions still.
Research, PDFs and file limits
Claude Pro states a clear limit for long inputs: a context window of up to 1M tokens, depending on the model. OpenAI doesn't publish a token figure for the ChatGPT app, and its plan pages only describe memory and context as expanded on Plus.
Both plans include a research mode that reads many sources and writes a report. Claude calls it Research and keeps it off the free plan. ChatGPT Plus has expanded deep research, which Free users get in limited form.
OpenAI claims an edge on PDFs. It says GPT-6.1 Sol beats Opus 5.5 on its GDP.pdf test at less than half the cost per task. That is OpenAI's own benchmark, so treat it as a claim until someone else repeats it, and note that Plus subscribers reach GPT-6.1 Sol through Work, not in Chat.
ChatGPT Plus also gives you 20 GB of file storage. Anthropic's plan page doesn't list a storage figure for Pro.
Images, voice and desktop apps
OpenAI's plan card promises "higher quality image creation" on Plus. Claude has no equivalent. Anthropic's help center says it doesn't generate photos or illustrations the way image tools do. What it can draw is charts, diagrams and interactive visuals in HTML and SVG, a beta feature on web and desktop.
Both plans have voice mode. ChatGPT runs native apps on web, iOS, Android, macOS and Windows, which matters if you live in a desktop app all day. Claude runs on web, iOS, Android and desktop, and Pro adds Claude in Chrome plus add-ins for Microsoft 365 and Outlook.
That image gap has a price. A Claude Pro subscriber who needs images every week pays for a separate generator as well. Our AI stack cost calculator adds up a mix like that before you commit.
Usage limits: what $20 buys in practice
Claude Pro measures usage in sessions that reset every five hours. Anthropic's Pro plan article says message counts vary with message length, file size, conversation length and model, and Anthropic may also set weekly and monthly caps. Hit a limit and Pro lets you buy usage credits to keep going. Anthropic raised the five-hour limits on Pro when Opus 5.5 launched.
OpenAI's help center says ChatGPT Plus may cap messages, especially when demand is high. Free users already get unlimited everyday text chats. What the Plus upgrade buys is reasoning levels, tools and capacity, not basic chat.
Heavy users end up eyeing the next tier, at five times the price.

When to upgrade: Claude Max vs ChatGPT Pro
Both heavy-use tiers start at $100 a month.
Claude Max comes in two sizes, with 5x or 20x the usage of Pro. It adds higher output limits, priority access at busy times and early access to new features. Each size comes with $100 to $200 a month in API credits for building on Anthropic's platform, worth having if you write code against the API anyway.
OpenAI split ChatGPT Pro into three tiers: Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500, at $100, $200 and $500 a month. Pro adds GPT-6 Pro, more Work and Codex usage, 100 GB of storage and Dots, which OpenAI describes as always-on agents. OpenAI's Pro tiers article hides one change. New Pro 200 subscriptions get a lower usage allowance, and existing subscribers keep the old one until 29 October 2026.
We'd hold off until limits block real work on more than a few days a month. On Claude, usage credits cover an occasional heavy week without the jump to Max.
Privacy: the same default on both plans
Your chats on Pro or Plus can go into model training unless you opt out.
On Claude, Anthropic's 2025 consumer-terms update made training a choice you set in Privacy Settings. Allow it and Anthropic keeps new chats for five years. Refuse it and they're kept for 30 days. Incognito chats are never used for training.
On ChatGPT, open Settings, then Data controls, and turn off "Improve the model for everyone", a switch that OpenAI's data controls article explains and the Privacy Portal also offers. Temporary chats aren't used for training. Rating a reply with a thumbs up or down can still let OpenAI use that conversation.
If you use either plan for client work, turn training off on day one. Staff putting company data into personal plans is a risk known as shadow AI. Both vendors sell business plans that exclude training by default, and teams in Singapore can use our PDPA and PDPC procurement guide to question vendors before buying one.
Do you need to pay at all?
Plenty of people never do. Both free plans cover everyday use, and each one stops at a clear point.
Claude's free plan includes Sonnet and Haiku, web search, memory, voice, connectors, Artifacts and up to five projects. Opus, Research, Claude Code and Claude in Chrome all need Pro.
ChatGPT's free plan gives unlimited everyday text chats on OpenAI's lighter Luna model, with limited uploads, image creation, voice, deep research and Codex. OpenAI's help center notes that ads may appear on the free plan in some countries. A cheaper Go plan sits between Free and Plus and may also show ads.
Paying for two plans that overlap is how subscriptions pile up. Our AI shelfware report counts how many paid seats go unused, and the true cost of AI tools report explains why the sticker price is rarely the whole bill.

What each plan leaves out
Claude Pro has no image generator, so a weekly image habit means a second tool. Heavy coding or long research sessions run into the five-hour reset, and Fable costs extra even on Pro. Anthropic sells Pro only in supported locations, priced in local currency where supported, and some regions add tax at checkout.
Plus is weaker once documents get long. OpenAI publishes no in-app context size, the public writing rankings favor Claude's top model, and OpenAI keeps its strongest models in Work and Codex instead of the chat you use most. And if you already pay for an image tool, the main reason to pick Plus over Pro mostly disappears.
How to decide in one week
A week on both free plans settles it for most people.
- List five tasks you do every week. Include a long document and a piece of writing, plus images or code if you use them.
- Run them on both free plans. Note where each assistant stops you: a model you can't pick, a limit, a missing feature.
- Check what stopped you against the plan table above. If it's on one plan and not the other, you have your answer.
- Review after a month. If you hit limits often, compare Claude's usage credits with the jump to Max or Pro.
More head-to-heads sit in the comparison category. If neither plan fits, describe the job in Mindber Ask or browse Discover for other assistants. Developers can start with our AI coding assistants list, which includes browser agents such as Codex in Chrome. The ChatGPT and Claude profiles track both products, Compare puts them side by side, and older model pages such as Claude Opus 4.8 stay up for reference.
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude Pro better than ChatGPT Plus?
For writing, long documents and coding, yes. Opus 5.5 tops Arena's writing and web-app rankings, and no Claude plan below Pro includes it. For images, no: only ChatGPT Plus generates them.
How much do Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus cost?
The US list price is the same for both, before tax, and it can differ by country. Paying a year of Claude Pro up front costs the same as ten monthly payments. ChatGPT Plus has no yearly discount, so a year costs $240, though OpenAI's cheaper Go plan sits below it and may show ads.
Is Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus better for coding?
They are close. Claude Pro comes with Claude Code and ChatGPT Plus with Codex. Claude Opus 5.5 led Arena's WebDev leaderboard in October 2026, but places two to four sat within the margin of error. Heavy coders may hit usage limits on either plan.
Can Claude Pro create images?
No. Anthropic's help center rules out photos and illustrations. Claude can still read images you upload and draw charts or diagrams in code. Of the two plans, only ChatGPT Plus creates images.
Does Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus have higher usage limits?
Neither vendor publishes a fixed message count. Claude Pro resets every five hours, may add weekly or monthly caps and sells usage credits past the limit. ChatGPT Plus may cap messages when demand is high. Both vendors sell a bigger plan for heavy use.
Do Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus train on my chats?
They can, unless you opt out. On Claude, set your model-training choice in Privacy Settings. On ChatGPT, the switch sits under Data controls. Incognito chats on Claude and temporary chats on ChatGPT aren't used for training.
Should I pay for both Claude Pro and ChatGPT Plus?
Only if each covers work the other can't, such as images on ChatGPT and long writing on Claude. Together they cost $40 a month. Paying for one and keeping the other on its free tier still covers everyday chat on both.
